“Anathem” book trailer

Posted: April 17th, 2009 | Author: Chris | Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

I am thinking of creating a book trailer for Niel Stephenson’s Snow Crash, so naturally I started to research book trailers and found this one for Stephenson’s newest book Anathem. Wow.

The World of Anathem

I haven’t actually read the book yet, but the low-budget CGI, indulgent use of soft focus, and cheesy fight scenes doesn’t really tempt me to do so.

When I first saw this video it completely blew my mind. Not only do I love the song, but the cinematography is incredible. The high-speed movement through Tokyo(?) is so smooth, and beyond the ‘mirror’ effect there are no visible special effects. I have seen video mirrored before, but in this video it is used horizontally to great effect. Even when the movie begins to go kaleidoscopic towards the end it shies away from cliche due to the deft editing and interesting subject matter.

The quality of the video itself is pretty amazing as well. It looks like it was probably shot digitally in HD just by the look of some of the lighting and the high quality of the footage. The post-processing made the blacks very rich and overall the color and tone is richly saturated. It definitely makes me want to try out the HD camera we have in our program just to see what kinds of things I might be able to get with it.

Time-lapse Flash experiments

I am loading frames from a time-lapse movie into Flash, then using masks and user input to play them back. The third movie plays the frames back on top of one another with some blending applied.
